Is Your Desk Causing You Pain?
By Dr. Katy and Dr. Isaac Mooberry
Our bodies are designed to move but in today’s world we do a lot of sitting…. on the couch, in the car, and at our desks. Not only are we more stationary but also we are usually sitting slumped over, causing poor posture that can lead to even more problems. So what happens if you don’t move and have poor posture? Headaches, carpal tunnel and arm pain from typing, increased stress and pain on the low back and mid back, and eventual UNHAPPINESS because you are in pain!
So how can you prevent pain at your desk? Take mini breaks every 20-30 minutes. Practice better posture by rolling your shoulders down and back and pulling your chin back, not down. Make sure your desk is ergonomically set up and that you sit back in your chair and use your backrest. Protect your wrists by using the gel pads in front of your keyboard and mouse. Exercise every day, even if you just take a 20-minute walk at lunch, and develop a stretching routine.
How can chiropractic help me? Chiropractic adjustments help realign the bones in the spine, so that the body’s natural curves remain in proper alignment so they can act as shock absorbers. When the spine is in proper alignment, there is less stress on the muscles that are moving the body around and there is less pressure on the nerves that are controlling the movement. We can also help you improve your posture with rehabilitative exercises and stretches. We can teach you how to set up your desk so that you are putting as little stress on your body while you are busy working at your computer. We also have a massage therapist that will work out the knots in the muscles so that they can heal and continue
However, please remember that pain is not OK! Your body is trying to tell you that something is wrong and it wants you to stop! But, with a few simple lifestyle and desk changes, you can make your desk an oasis for your work and your body! At Get Moving Chiropractic we can reduce your pain, teach you better posture, as well as different ways to work more efficiently without causing pain. Make an appointment today at 303-670-7777.
